KINKY SEX...

My husband told me he wanted me to write some "kinky sex". I thought the vibrating diamond I wrote in Elfin Blood could be considered kind of kinky, but he doesn't think so. Warning, explicit excerpt coming up, skip over if you don't want to read the vibrating diamond scene!!

Their eyes held as he tossed her denims over his shoulders. He buried his hand in her hair, kneading her scalp with his fingers.

“This.” His palm flattened over her bare pussy and she flinched at the jolt of heat shooting through her. “Is beautiful.”

He tugged against her hair, holding her steady as he leaned over her and put his mouth to her breasts through the thin fabric. The scrape of his teeth against the cloth caused her to whimper and arch beneath him.

“Can you tone it down a bit,” he asked, grazing his fangs along the underside of her breast.

“Tone what down?”

“The music.” He rose to his knees, his features pinched.

“I’m not making that music.” Julija was too busy trying to catch her breath to worry about the melody. The pads of his fingers rolled her nipples through the fabric while the palm of his other hand rubbed the outer folds of her sex. She squirmed, itching to press her thighs together to alleviate her escalating arousal.

“Of course you are. You’re a Jewel Master. They’re singing your lust.”

Julija touched him for the first time, tracing his wide, sexy lips with her finger—lips she’d fantasized about.

“I’m not a Jewel Master,” she said, baffled by his statement. She traced the point of a protruding fang. “Ow!” she cried, jerking her finger back to peer at the blood beading the pad of her index finger.

Quick as a snake striking, he reached out and placed her finger against the center of his lips. Mired between fascination and horror, she watched as he used her blood to paint his mouth red. Landau licked his lips. The pleasure flaring across his face nearly brought her to orgasm. Again, he painted his lips with her blood, his eyes rolling with delight when he swiped the moisture away.

Landau dragged his tongue over her finger, cleansing the blood from her flesh. He squeezed and blood beaded to the surface. Again, he licked the digit like it was his personal lollipop. She gyrated beneath him, undulated her hips into his thigh. Had she missed the anatomy lesson that said fingers were erogenous zones?

He sucked her finger into his mouth, his gaze holding hers steady as he sipped nourishment from the tiny wound. A moan tore from her. He suckled again, a hard drag that tweaked her clitoris.

“Mmm.” She moaned, arching her back, needing him inside her.

A grin skirted his lips as her vampire suckled. She cried out as an orgasm jerked
through her, surprising and embarrassing her.

Landau chuckled. “You’re easy, Jewel Master.”

Easy, yes. Sex-starved too.

“I don’t know what that is.” Her ragged breath hitched as she tried to orient herself and follow the conversation.

“How can you not?” His brows met his hairline, showing his surprise. “Jewel Masters are rare, but still . . . .” He eyed her speculatively. “You’re joking, right?”

Julija didn’t think she could muster a verbal response so she shook her head.

“I’ll show you,” he said, his gaze determined. He looked at the jewels surrounding them on the bed, his fingers skimming through them until he located a diamond at least ten carats in size. He pressed the flat side against a nipple. “Can you feel it vibrating?”

“Yes.” She strangled on the word. The vibration against her nipple was connected to her vagina.

“Only a Jewel Master can make it do that.” Landau trailed the diamond to the other breast and smiled at her moan of pleasure. “I’m not a Jewel Master,” he said. “Wood Elves create Jewel Masters.” He clarified the last sentence with, “I don’t have Wood Elf in me. You do.”

Mischief darkened his gaze as he dragged the vibrating diamond down her belly, circled her navel and then slid it downward to the flesh at the apex of her thighs.

As if entranced, Landau spread her vaginal lips and pressed the gem against her clitoris. The diamond acted like a tiny, wicked vibrator.

Five seconds. She panted. Ten seconds. She panted faster. Fifteen sec—She climaxed a second time. The diamond launched into hyper-vibration drive, the harmony wobbled her eardrums, the melody so loud, Landau flinched.

He slid the rock lower, soaking the crystal with her wetness. He pressed the gemstone against her entrance; the humming diamond grew louder, vibrated rapidly against her swollen flesh.

Grimacing at the decibel level, Landau removed the stone from her body. “Proof,” Landau said, sounding strangled. When she focused on him, his eyes turned blood red and he looked turned-on, like her. “You’re a Jewel Master.”

That wasn't kinky enough for him. *scratches head* Mmmkay…I told him the short erotic I just subbed had a fairy using his wing like a dildo. I got a "that's just weird look" and a very verbal "no."

I asked for examples of kinky and I received, "I don't know. But you know, kinky." Obviously I don't know because *points to references above* I thought I was already writing kinky stuff.

I asked if he wanted me to write threesomes and he made a face and shrugged. I asked if he wanted BDSM and I received a definite "No." I'm at a loss here and maybe he's afraid to speak his mind—a first for him!—and worried I'll think he's "weird" if he does. I embrace the weird label and he shy's away from it. Maybe he wants me to come up with something kinky to try on him, kind of like in the name of research. LOL

As I told him, we have friends who think "having" sex at all is kinky. Just for the record, I think they're all a tad strange because I can't imagine life without sex and orgasms. Can I get an Amen?? The same friends and many family members would think the things he and I indulge in are kinky. So, kinky can mean many different things to people.

As a reader and a writer, what do you consider kinky? What do you want to see more of and less of? I'm interested in knowing because I'm ready, willing and able to write what folks want to read.

Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

BOO!!! HAPPY PRE-HALLOWEEN!!!

October!!!!!!

Yesterday started a month long celebration of Halloween for me and I'm putting up all my Halloween houses this weekend! Can't wait to get neck deep in decorating my house with them. I enjoy putting them up more than I do my Christmas houses. I also love that now I can wear all my skull jewelry and voodoo doll jewelry without anyone thinking I'm into demonic worship or something equally evil.

So, to kick off the month of October and my 31 days of Halloween celebration, I’m going to talk about Haunted Houses…

*insert evil laugh*

Bwhahahaha….

We’ve all grown up with stories of haunted houses, haunted dormitories or haunted areas—something haunted anyway. The city I grew up in had a local legend about a bridge. If one went to it at night, the ghosts of those that had driven off the bridge would haunt the place. Personally, I went necking down there with my boyfriend and I didn’t see anything. Nope, nothing! So much for a legend, huh? Or maybe I was too consumed with kissing the boyfriend to notice any ghosts had they been haunting the place. =)

The term “haunted houses” brings to mind my personal experiences. I grew up in a house that, while not necessarily haunted, it had a spirit of some sort living with us in perfect harmony. I often felt protected and loved by that spirit. I've mentioned before that I believe my great-grandfather haunts my father’s house, as I’ve seen his spirit more than once. The comparison between my great-grandfather and the spirit I grew up with is startling. When I saw my great-grandfather the feeling was so intense, so vile and aggressive, and he wanted us gone. Or that was the way I interpreted it.

I have a girlfriend, Nicole, who bought a home with her husband. It was a beautiful piece of property, twenty-five acres, with an older fixer-up home. The home was so old it had a well built on the corner of the front porch. It was cool, a neat little piece of history. I can’t even imagine having to draw my water out of it just to meet the basic necessary needs. But after having kids I see the danger in it too. The place had oodles of potential and best of all it was away from the big city. It was so quiet and peaceful.

My first visit there, I came home telling my husband the place had a ghost. Everywhere I went, I felt like I was being watched. I never felt any hostility, but more curiosity. Daytime or nighttime, it didn’t matter, some unseen presence watched. From inside the home to the shed in the backyard, something always watched. The only time I could truly get away from the presence was when we would ride the four-wheelers across the back part of the property and woods.

I didn’t realize until we visited for a Halloween party a couple of months later that Nicole had purchased the home from an estate after the previous owner, an elderly woman, passed away in it. It was like the light-bulb went off in my head—a smack my forehead V8 moment!—where I thought ‘that is why I’m feeling those hidden eyes’.

Another weekend I was there goofing off with Nicole and her mother, Jill, when Jill started talking about her conversations with the spirit of the woman who once owned the house! I got chills!! I teared up! To have my feelings and thoughts confirmed was exciting. The only thing that would have made this haunted house perfect would have been for it to have a cemetery sitting on the property! LOL

I went home that night and told my husband about Jill knowing there was a ghost there too and couldn’t resist saying, “I told you so!” His reply was that I wasn’t the only crazy person in the world. ;-)

I’d love to hear your comments...do you believe in hauntings or spirits (ghosts)? Have you had an experience you'd like to share with us? If so, leave me a comment! We'd love to hear your tale.

Scary photo of the week…

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! And a safe 31 days of Halloween celebration!

NEVER FORGOTTEN!

One of the American flags found at the site Pictures, Images and Photos

Today, I want to remember the lives lost in the World Trade Center attacks. They should never be forgotten for the sacrifice they were each forced to make that day. It's a moment in our lives we'll all remember where we were when we heard the news. Me...I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest child and at work when we received the call from our boss lady to turn on the news. That day gripped me in numb disbelief.

Last October I received the chance to visit the site of where the World Trade Centers once stood. I thought I would feel a heavy weight of souls at unrest. I didn't. Instead the site was steeped in silence. Standing there looking at the chain-linked fence, lined in advertisement so you couldn't see into the site, I tried to get a sense for the location. But for me it's just so hard to wrap my brain around the fact that so many people lost their lives in one spot.

There was a metal ball located between the two World Trade Towers. It has since been moved to the park outside where you board the ferry to cross over to Ellis Island and the Statute of Liberty. This ball wasn't crushed by the Trade Towers crumbling, but was damaged due to the massive heat from the fire.

I'm known for being able to perceive and communicate (to a limited extent) with what I call ghosts. So, I was surprised when I felt nothing but silence at the site of where so many people died. It was only when I entered the church yard of the church across the street (St. Paul's) was I bombarded with ghostly conversation. And neither of them were from the trade tower deaths, but had died long before. Yeah, yeah, for those of you that think I'm crazy...I've heard it all, so save any of the criticism you wanna share. I'm here to today to honor the lives that were lost.

Wow! It's Saturday Already!!!

Can summer get any busier? I dash from one sporting event--football or karate practice--to guitar lessons. I'm rushing around so much, I cannot keep up with the days. And I had a useless argument with my almost 13 year old...that today was not Saturday. I said it was Friday, he reminded--insisted--today was Saturday. *sigh* I guess you know who won that argument. ;-)

Summer is too busy and we have only about 4 weeks left before school starts back in my neck of the woods. Last weekend we spent a good portion of it painting our home. It's still not complete, but good progress has been made. I hope everyone here had a fabulous 4th of July?

I've been writing on Where the Road to Hell Begins, Part One - Pandora's Box. Too long of a title, right? LOL These characters are all sorts of crazy talkative and each time I write, I'm tapping out 3,000 plus words. I can't sleep at night for all the chatter they are doing. It's fabulous when a book writes itself this easily, but a few moments of peace might not be uncalled for. I've almost hit 60,000 words into the story with 8 mapped out chapters left to write, so it's almost complete. Woohoo!! But the characters are already throwing dialogue and scenes at me for book 2!!! *facepalm* I told ya, crazy talkative. I've never had a book write itself so easily, without any quirks or glitches somewhere along the way, but this one...it's easy breezy and I'm loving it...even if I do feel a tad psychotic at times with all the mental chatter. I'm super excited about this project and I find I'm more worried about how readers will receive it than I have been about any other story. Odd, huh?

I've not managed to take my book, A Kiss of Wytchblood, and resubmit it to another publisher. But, I've been thinking maybe it needs a name change...to what, I don't know. LOL But, I've been thinking the current title doesn't have enough pizzazz. Am I over thinking this? Any thoughts or suggestions from the peanut gallery?

I received a nasty review on my current book, Elfin Blood. Made me wonder why the person even read the book if she/he disliked it that much and he/she missed the point of the book, which was glaringly obvious in his/her review. But one bad review compared to a handful of wonderful reviews...eh, I won't worry about it. As a writer, you can't or I'd never write another word. Even the big authors get bad reviews and not everyone can like what I write. Be a perfect world if they did. It would be an even better perfect world if all my books were smash hit movies! LOL Hey, dreams are free! ;-)

Thought for the Day
: Somewhere along the journey of my life, I've been told men are more visual than women. I wonder if this is true because I love a good visual aid.

What emotions do you experience when you look at this photo? For me, it's something along the lines of hot and raw passion you feel the next morning....kind of like a delightful memory, but one you can deliciously feel. You know what I'm talking about, right? =D

Week of Crazies...and Rejections

This has been one week of crazies. I've had family here, both children sick with bronchitis, running between karate, football practice and guitar lessons, while my husband was in Germany.

My book, A Kiss of Wytchblood, was rejected by an e-publisher with no reason given, just a form letter telling me it wasn't right for them and they apologized for the form letter, but didn't have time to give me a reason for the rejection. *sigh* I can live with rejection. I keep thinking this rejection should have bothered me more than it did, but I lacked the emotional disappointment that I think I should have. Not sure what that means. Maybe I wasn't as gungho about this publisher as I'd though. *shrugs* Either way, I'll resubmit the book and continue the waiting game.

My boys are at their grandparents this weekend--*does a happy jig*--so my husband and I are going to the movies tonight to see A-Team. I so, so hope it doesn't screw up the television series I watched as a kid. I took my two boys to see the remake of Karate Kid. They loved it, but I wasn't impressed. Jaden Smith is a doll, but otherwise...*yawn* Just my opinion because I know other adults that enjoyed it as much as my boys did.

I'm holding my 3rd Caribbean Giveaway over at my other blogsite. Here's the LINK if you want to leave me a comment and be entered to win. I will draw a winner next Friday, July 2nd, so there's still plenty of time to be entered to win! The photo of what I'm giving away is below. But in order to be eligible to win it, you MUST leave a comment at Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem. Comments here don't count.

Gift giving away @ Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem.

On a positive note, I received an awesome review from Seriously Reviewed for Elfin Blood. Seriously Reviewed gave me a score of 8 out of 10 and said: "SWEET! Are you a vampire lover? Do you like Lord of the Rings? I love both and really dug this book :) Hot, action packed and filled with great characters. Gracen Miller has done a really good job in telling a fantasy story that, even though was fiction and far fetched, still kept me pulled in and reading until the last page. Oh so hot and rocking :) The action didn't stop and just when you thought it might....yep it didn't. Kicken story that I will be reading again soon :)" To read the entire review, click HERE.

Okies, I'll shut up with the rambling now. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend! Stay safe, keep cool and away from the blasted oil slick! *grumble, grumble*

I'm Back!!!

I'm back from my Caribbean vacation! My husband and I took our two sons on a Caribbean cruise. Wouldn’t it have been fun if all the Wicked, Thorn & Roses readers and bloggers could have gone too!

We traveled to Grand Cayman Islands, Honduras, Belize and Mexico. So, beginning today and continuing the next three weeks, I’m throwing a CARIBBEAN GIVEAWAY over at my other blog site Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem, BUT the giveaway is for both blog sites! It is easier to run one contest rather than two. So, if you want to be in the drawing for the giveaways, go here and leave me a comment, something as simple as “Boo!”, “Yo!”, “Hey, Mon!” OR take a stab at answering the TRIVIA QUESTION posted at the bottom of that blog and you’ll be entered to win that week’s Caribbean giveaway! Best of luck! This week’s winner will receive 1) a handmade Mahogany Belize bookmark and 2) a ceramic plaque of Ixchel, who was the jaguar goddess of medicine and midwifery in the Maya culture and was referred to as the “the goddess of making children”. (Photo below). To learn more about the goddess, Ixchel, visit Wikipedia.

Now, strap in and get ready to take a virtual trip of the first two days of our Cruise…

Miami from the ship.

The top of the ship, where my sons spent many hours dividing their time between the waterslide and eating ice cream cones.

My husband and I at the front of the ship before sailing.

Miami Marina directly across the street from the Port of Miami.

This was a beautiful sight to me and would make a beautiful postcard!

Our ship leaving port.

Sunset at Sea!

Isn't it beautiful?!?

Me the first formal night on ship.

BOTH personal photos posted against my will! My husband thought I should post them to keep my blog personal. Am I the only person that hates photos of myself? *grumbles...grumbles*

Belize Bookmark and Ixchel Plaque winner will receive!

DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE ME A COMMENT AT MLM TO BE ENTERED TO WIN THIS WEEK'S CARIBBEAN GIVEAWAY!! A WINNER WILL BE DRAWN NEXT FRIDAY, JUNE 18th.

Next week, I'll start talking about each stop and will post pictures. First up is George Town, Grand Cayman Islands. A very beautiful, clean, safe and mega rich Island.

PEN NAMES...

Pen names seem to be used in the writing industry as often as real names are. There are some valid reasons for pen names. Maybe your pen name is snazzier than your real name? Others use different pen names depending upon their genre.

Using an alias can be liberating too. I can let loose and give free reign to my wild side, write wicked things and none of my family and friends know it’s me so they can’t judge. This is the main reason I chose to use a pen name. I live in what’s referred to as the Bible Belt and the things I write aren’t biblically approved. At all. Heck, I have family that believes I’m going to hell for writing about vampires…forget the sex, just the vampire writing is getting me a one-way direct ticket to the pit. *rolls eyes* But, even though I don’t have a problem with folks knowing what I write, I didn’t think it fair to subject my children to the scrutiny and judgment they’d receive if certain judgmental people learned what I write. Keeping my pen name a deep dark secret is becoming more difficult, however, thanks to my eldest son. He tells everyone that’ll listen that I’m an author. He even told his principal I was a published author. At least I know he’s proud of me.

The alias Gracen Miller gives me anonymity also and none of the psychos can track me down and stalk me as easily either. Right? LOL Yeah, that might be a tad drastic, especially since a good hacker could probably still find me. But I admit I’ve met a couple of folks on the internet that make me really, really, really happy that I decided to use a pen name. I feel safer knowing that only a trusted few know my true identity. There are some crazy folks out there!

So, do you use a pen name? Why or why not? What was your reason for using one?

I’ll blog about our cruise next Saturday! I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

5 THINGS MY CHILDREN TAUGHT ME

I’m at Naughty Novelists and I’m giving away a copy of Elfin Blood to one commenter, so come visit me and leave a message for a chance to win. Click here: http://www.cheriedesues2.com/naughty-novelists.html

~~~~~
I’m kind of knocking off the theme “All I need to know I learned in Kindergarten”, but I thought I’d talk about the 5 things I’ve learned from my children…
5 – They’re money pits! And I've been broke since the first one was born. I thought I’d stop bleeding money when they were out of diapers and stopped drinking formula, but sheesh I wish I’d known it only gets worse. Now they five dollar me to death for this thing at school, or that thing at karate, or that special they "need" at Walmart and Game Stop…it never ends! And I fear it will get worse as the teenage years loom closer.
4 – A two year old learns curse words faster than one syllable words!! And knows how to use them with proper sentence structure. Yikes! I learned how to curb my foul mouth quicker than I could teach them to curb theirs! I used to love the word “damn-it” until I heard it uttered from my two-year-old’s mouth when one of his toys was frustrating him. Boy, was that an eye opener…er, ear opener. ;-)
3 – It doesn’t take a quivering bottom lip for them to get their way, but a sweet look and the words “I love you” will crush my resolve almost instantly! I had no idea I was such a sucker until I had children of my own! Who knew the joke would be on me and that they’d wrap me around their little fingers and lead me around like a dog on a leash.
2 – Children see the world with innocent glee. I’ve lost the wonder and joy of going to the beach, but watching the wonder and joy on my child’s face for the first time was priceless! We’re leaving Sunday for a cruise, the first my boys will take, and I can’t wait to see the excitement on their faces as they get to experience the adventure for the first time. When I get back, I’ll blog about the cruise and post pictures.
1 – How to love unselfishly! This is nothing they taught me. But the love I felt at the moment of their birth is unexplainable unless you have children of your own. I didn’t know I could love so intensely until my boys were born. Suddenly I had humans I’d suffer everything for and give everything up for them. But, they make life worth every sacrifice. And…most of the time I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything. =)
So, what are some of the things you’ve learned from your child/children?
I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend.
Sorry for my Absence
* Contest below*
I'm sorry I haven't blogged in forever. Things have been crazy in my life, problems at home with my oldest son and the final culmination coming with my little brother (he just turned 19) almost dying from a drug overdose. None of us even knew he was using drugs and huffing. So, it's been a long couple of weeks at my house.
But, I'm still looking on the positive side and am demanding things get better pronto! lol We leave for vacation next Friday, so I hope that'll be restful and relaxing and hopefully I can forget all my worries. I'll make sure to schedule some blogs to post so that there will be something here on Saturday's while I'm gone.
A couple of weeks ago I submitted my book, A Kiss of Wytch Blood, which is a dark paranormal romance involving an all powerful wytch and a vampire that's hiding some huge secrets about his own powers. No word back on it yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Like I said, I'm staying positive. ;-)
*CONTEST* As a celebration of summer, I'm giving away a tote bag (beach bag) at Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem. I encourage all of you to enter for a chance to win because this celebration is for both sites and is for both of our readers/followers. A picture of the bag is posted at Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem if you're interested. It's open to all US residents and to enter all you have to do is leave me a comment. Leave the comment at Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem or it won't count. I'll announce the winner on Sunday (tomorrow), so be sure to leave a comment there if you're interested in a chance to win.
I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and again I'm sorry for ditching you guys for a couple of weeks. ~huggles~
WINNING HEROINE NAME
All the votes have been cast and the winner is in. And I do believe the winning name will make Tierney happy. LOL By a landside 65% of the vote, GENEVIEVE is the winning heroine name.
Since the meaning of names are important in this book, I did a search of the meaning of Genevieve and was shocked to see that it means “Woman of the People”. Wow! Knowing the demonic plans for Genevieve, that is the perfect name for her!!
I’ve already done a search and replace in my story and substituted Genevieve for Katherine. Thank you bunches to everyone who participated!
JODER suggested Genevieve, which means she’ll win the prizes. You left me your e-mail, Joder, so I’ll drop you an e-mail in a few minutes.
Since SHERRY and DIANE TAYLOR suggested the other two names in the contest, Jacqueline and Catia, I’ll send you and PDF e-book of Elfin Blood if you want it. If you’re interested, just drop me an e-mail at contact@gracenmiller.com. (That’s contact at gracenmiller dot com). (I'll attempt to track you both down by e-mail, but just in case you don't hear from me and are interested, send me an e-mail!)
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
Three Heroine Names...
Last week I asked for you to suggest names for a "kick-ass" heroine (I don't remember who called her that, but I chuckled over it and loved it). I intended to announce the winning names yesterday, but my husband had surgery this week and it's been a little crazy...a lot crazy actually! After surgery the hospital lost my husband, not a good feeling. And he's a 6'4", 230 pound man, so he can't fit in any ole' nook and cranny! My imagination soared and hovered around the thought that he wasn't lost, but that something was wrong with him and they were stalling before coming to tell me. But, he was ultimately found in recovery, just not in the recovery area that was planned. And he was having problems with his blood pressure dropping, dropped as low as 102/42 at one point, so he spent 2 hours in recovery instead of 45 minutes as expected. All is good now, he's home, started phyiscal therapy the day after...
So...enough about me! Let's get what you're waiting for. The three winning names chosen by random.org all came from suggestions made here at WTR. So, congrats to the WTR folks! Those names are:
Genevieve (offered by Joder)
Jacqueline (offered by Sherry)
Catia (Katia) (offered by Diane Taylor)
A poll has been created on the upper left-hand corner of the Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem blog so you can vote for your favorite name! Here's the link: http://moonlightlacemayhem.blogspot.com/
Voting ends April 9, 2010 and the winner will be announced on Saturday, April 10, 2010.
Good luck on voting your favorite name!!!
Help Me Find the Perfect Heroine Name!!!
Heroines deserve strong names...right?
Anyone ever notice that heroine (the lead female in a book) and heroin (the addictive illegal drug) are pronounced the same way? And, of course, the spelling is almost identical. Hmmm….Do you think someone somewhere is trying to tell us something? Like maybe we’re a man’s drug of choice or we’re as addictive as narcotics? LOL Because we know no one is suggesting we’re big trouble! *cheeky grin*
I’m in the middle of writing and the hero’s name jumped out at me from a billboard. Phoenix—Nix to his friends. Everywhere I look now, I see the name Phoenix. So, I know it’s the right name for my hero. But the heroine, we’re struggling over her name. Nothing seems to fit correctly. She’s been Grace, but that was too close to my name and I kept writing Gracen. So she had a name change to Samantha, but she doesn’t feel like a Samantha. That probably sounds crazy, but I have to “feel” the name before it sits well with me. Next, she became Alexis and then Katherine and that’s where we still are. But, once again, she doesn’t feel like an Alexis and Katherine is okay, but I’m not jumping for joy over it. I do like that I can shorten Katherine to Kat, which would fit with Nix’s character, but there’s still something holding me back for loving Katherine/Kat.
So, here’s where you step in. I want you to pick the heroine’s name. From now until next Thursday, April 1, 2010 (no joking!), you get to suggest names. Then on April 2nd I’ll allow random.org to pick 3 of the suggested names from the list and then you’ll vote your favorite name from those 3 names. The winning name will become the heroine’s new and final name.
To help you suggest a name, here’s a small bio for her: She’s twenty-five, has a five year old son named Avery. Was romanced into an early marriage to a man of means with political and financial connections, but he left her without a word when Avery was two. So, she’s a single mother, with a strong sense of protective mother instincts. But things aren’t as they seem. Overnight, Avery turns homicidal, kills the family cat, then moves on to gutting the family dog, before starting on wildlife animals and the neighborhood pets. A phone call to a psychic tells her a demon is to blame and that she’ll send reinforcements. That’s when Nix enters the scene.
My heroine will face many obstacles, all related to her son. She’ll grow from being a woman with unsure footing in this world, into a woman of conviction and determination to save her son from the evil forces that threaten his livelihood, while learning nothing about her life is as it appeared.
So, she’ll need a solid name and I’m thinking something old-fashioned. But please don’t give me names like Beth, Lisa, Marie, Bridgette or Jane. I have nothing against those names, but they’re a little more commonplace than I’d prefer. But I don’t want names like Ethel and Mildred, either. They’re too old fashioned! Give me something classy and practical.
Don’t forget to leave me a comment with your name suggestion!!
One Rule: You cannot suggest a name that’s already been suggested. If you do, you will not be entered into the contest unless you suggest an alternate name. The person that suggests the winning name will win the following items:
1. A 2010 Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem desk calendar:
2. A Gracen Miller Mouse Pad:
3. And if the winner wants, I'll throw in a PDF e-book of Elfin Blood.
To help you get a better feel for the issue, here’s the first two chapters …they’re unedited and very rough draft, so please pardon any errors or snafus.
CHAPTER ONE
“What?” Katherine said with a mixture of disbelief and irritation. She looked at her son, Avery, and felt adamant denial surge in the form of a pounding headache. She’d come to the doctor for answers and this screwed up diagnosis was what she got?
“Ms. Wescott, all the tests came back normal.” The doctor scratched his chin as if intrigued. The thought of him being ‘intrigued’ over her son’s dilemma pissed her off. She forced aside the urge to whack him with her purse. “Everything except the anomaly with his blood,” he made a face, scrunching his features as if that anomaly still perplexed him. “Fascin—” The word fell incomplete when his glance landed on her hands twisting into tight fists in her lap. His gaze shot to her face. There was a flash of wariness in his ordinary brown eyes, like he expected her to give him a shiner any moment. She wanted to. She sure as hell wanted to pop him in the eye, but she had to settle for hoping the murder she felt at the despicable word ‘fascinating’ showed brightly on her face. He cleared his throat, his Adam’s apple bobbed nervously, and he failed to meet her gaze as he continued, “Otherwise, I can assure you there is nothing physically wrong with him.”
“Just psychologically?” she drawled with enough sarcasm to frighten a heavy-weight boxer.
“With the right psychiatrist and medication…Um…”
She would not drug her child into a zombie state so everyone could cope with his condition. Hell, he was already a zombie without medication.
“We think” —so refreshing that the doctor only thought and didn’t have a damn solid answer— “he can live a relatively normal life with medication.”
“Relatively?” she echoed, baffled why the doctor felt that should make her feel better about his diagnosis.
“Dissociative Identity Disorders are not the end of the world, Ms. Wescott.”
Dissociative Identity Disorder her ass! That was the new feel-good medical terminology for multiple personalities. Something her child did not have. Putting a nice, neat medical nametag on the disorder didn’t alter the diagnosis or make her feel any freaking better.
Although….she looked at her son. He sat on the table, his legs swishing back and forth like that of any high-energy child. Avery stared at the doctor with enough malice blazing from his baby-blue eyes that it sent shivers of dread up her spine. Yeah, she couldn’t deny something was amiss with him. But she trusted her gut and it said the problem was much more than multiple personality disorder.
Two months ago, he’d been a happy, healthy, normal child, one that giggled often and adored his feline and canine companions. The next day, he’d been mute and homicidal.
He’d snapped the cat’s neck the first week of the change, receiving multiple cat scratches before he managed feline murder. Five years old and he displayed a marked increase in strength. Explaining away that incident in the emergency room would have been difficult in the best scenarios. The hostile, blaming glances from the medical personal had made her feel worse than a slug. Easily read in those gazes was that if it happened again, Social Services would be called. She didn’t want or need a repeat performance of that event ever again. And if she thought Social Services would help, she’d call them herself.
The dog had been next. Avery had sliced and diced her with a kitchen carving knife. He’d gone into the fenced-in backyard to play and she’d left him alone long enough to pour a glass of iced tea...not more than five minutes at most. When she returned, she’d found him and the dog on the back porch. Blood everywhere like there’d been a struggle. His blonde hair had been speckled with the stuff, his pale face splotched red, his hands coated to his elbows like the hemoglobin had been used as lotion, and the clothes on his chest blossomed with the substance, as if he’d wallowed in the sanguine fluid. The smile on his face…her hands trembled at the memory. She’d choked on a scream and retched over the side of the railing until she could do nothing more than dry heave.
Avery had caught a fly and she’d been amazed at his quick reflexes. And then he tortured it, holding it steady with his fingers while he pulled off its legs before moving on to those fragile wings. Those incidences heralded the beginning of his atrocities.
Twice he’d tried to stab her, slicing her upper thigh the last time. She’d stitched the wound herself, worried about infection when the slash turned an angry shade of red. Religiously, she’d slathered the wound with antibiotic ointment, added warm salty compresses and luckily, the cut healed. It still ached and she’d forever wear the ragged scar of her son’s attack, but she refused to give up on him, or allow anyone to know the total truth of his ferocity. The protective instincts of motherhood had kicked in. Nothing on earth could force her to betray him.
He’d kicked, scratched and bitten her more times than she could count. When the violent episode ceased—sometimes he snapped out of it in the middle of the rage—he would collapse in her arms and sob until exhausted sleep claimed him. His heartbreak broke her heart.
The doctor didn’t seem to notice her distress—just as well—and continued in his patronizing tone, “This disorder always involves some sort of trauma, Ms. Wescott. Your frank honesty can help us determine the trauma and proceed accordingly.”
She ground her teeth hard, amazed they didn’t crack. “Nothing has changed in his life.” Not a damn thing since her husband walked out the door three years ago.
“I’m sure if you would consider—”
“Enough!” Katherine came to her feet with a snap. The doctor flinched in surprise, his words cut off midstream. She sent him a hostile glare, snatched up her purse, held her hand out to Avery and said, “Let’s go, baby.”
Avery plopped off the diagnosis table, while the doctor’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. Avery sent the doctor a smile that reeked of evil intent. It creeped her out when her baby wore that expression and she couldn’t even explain the expression. It was as docile a look as the one he always wore, but something about his eyes screeched not just evil, but malevolence. There was a difference.
She sniffed. What was that smell? It rather reminded her of rotten eggs. She put a finger to her nose, but nothing helped obliterate the stench. It’d become stronger lately. God-awful described the scent perfectly.
Katherine looked at the doctor. “Do you smell that?”
“Sulphur,” he whispered, face as pale as rice paper, gawking at her son like he was the prophesized anti-Christ. The doctor tossed the chart aside, jumped to his feet, knees popping, and exclaimed, “Ms. Wescott, I don’t think you should walk out that door.” He stared at Avery, not sparing her a single glance through the diatribe.
Wondering at the doctor’s sudden fear, she looked down at Avery. There it was again…that fiery orange glow surrounding the outer perimeter of his blue eyes. The child blinked and the color dissipated.
“We really must put him somewhere we can watch him around the clock, run tests and such.”
Her gaze snapped to him, eyes narrowing. As long as she breathed her son would never become a damn lab rat. “He does not leave me. Ever.”
Anyone that tried to take him was a dead man.
CHAPTER TWO
Katherine chewed on her fingernail. Through her window, she watched her neighbor staple up a “missing pet” poster across the street. The eighth missing animal this month. Would her nightmare ever end?
She released the curtain, turned with the sound of the curtain swishing behind her and walked to the liquor cabinet. Jack Daniels really, really wanted to be her friend or at least her amnesiac friend. Drinking to oblivion was stupid. Drunkenness would resolve nothing. On the morrow, she’d awake with a hangover and the reality that her ‘reality’ hadn’t changed at all. Or, she’d wake to a new horror Avery had committed while she’d been passed out.
Eight missing animals on one street, she thought rubbing her eyes and all of them dead by Avery’s hand. It’d been a month since her doctor visit and things were decidedly worse. Avery’s deeds now included sneaking out of the house at night, stealing the animals somehow from their neighbor’s homes, bringing them back to her house and butchering them in her backyard, or God help her, in her living room on more than one occasion. After committing animal murder, he’d climb back into bed bloody.
She relocated him to her bedroom, hoping she’d wake when he climbed out of bed. For the first time in her life, she became a dead sleeper rather than a light sleeper. She lived in a state of panic of Avery never getting better, her neighbors discovering his nightly jaunts and them learning the lengths she would go to cover up his nightly murderous jaunts. Worse, she feared, his victims would turn to the two legged variety.
Using an alias and going against her belief—or rather non-belief—she’d gone to the Church. They performed an exorcism. Nothing changed.
She visited an herbalist. They administered herbs and performed an incantation, with incense clogging up her sinuses. Again, nothing changed.
In desperation she’d turned to a witch doctor. He’d done his thing and still nothing changed.
A week ago she’d located her umpteenth psychic that claimed to have all the answers. Georgie lived in Kansas, talked a good game, but being jaded came with a lot of trust issues. A nervous giggle jerked through Katherine.
We’re not in Kansas anymore.
Katherine ran a hand down her face. She was starting to doubt her sanity. Then she’d doubted Georgie’s sanity when she cautioned Avery was the cause for her heavier sleep pattern so he could go about his nightly jaunts unhampered. That wasn’t even possible. Was it?
Georgie also warned that evil lurked near, an evil she couldn’t contain and one that would devour her soul. That sounded a bit hellfire and brimstone to her.
She shook her head. Evil? She wasn’t even sure she believed in evil. Her deceased Christian parents would think her blasphemous, but even if evil did exist, her parents couldn’t help Katherine with this dilemma. They were dead. Seven years in the grave now.
Regardless of religious beliefs, Georgie refused to explain, just promised help. Katherine had yet to see any assistance. With each passing day, hope grew further and further out of reach, a smoky mist she couldn’t wrap her fingers around.
Defeat was her constant companion, a weight bearing heavily on her shoulders. But now wasn’t the time for giving up. She shut the liquor cabinet, turned and walked up the stairs to check on Avery. She found him in his bedroom sitting on the floor at the foot of his bed. The tip of a knife rested in the palm of his hand, the handle horizontal, and rotating in a circle unaided by touch.
Katherine closed her eyes, counted to ten and prayed she hallucinated.
She opened her eyes and felt her heart lurch into her lungs. Nothing had changed!
Blackness narrowed her vision, she struggled to maintain consciousness. Avery turned his head toward her, his eyes shining with that strange orange glow and his wide-eyed expression articulated without words, “Look what I can do!”
He came at her so fast she barely had time to release a half-scream before he kicked her feet out from underneath her. She hit the floor hard, the breath whooshing from her lungs and her teeth jarring. He jumped on her before she had a chance to gasp a breath. Instinct took over, thank God. The blade glinted—it was serrated, odd that she noticed that at a time like this or that she wondered where he’d gotten it from—as he slashed it toward her neck.
She caught his wrist an inch from her throat.
Naked Las Vegas
I watched a documentary the other night about Greg Friedler’s newest book release, Naked Las Vegas. He’s photographed a few other books along the same theme: Naked New York, Naked LA and Naked London. Basically, he takes a photo of the person fully dressed as they would be if they were headed to work. Then he has them strip and he takes another photo of them naked. In his book, the two photos are placed side-by-side with their employment listed below.
As you would expect, an attorney would show up in his business suit and then when the clothes are removed, he’s tattooed all over. Not what most of us would think when we’re thinking of attorneys, but that’s why I loved this documentary and the idea of the book! Rarely are folks what they portray to the world, we hide ourselves from people all the time, not daring to show our true inner selves. Another was a sweet looking housewife tattooed from her feet to her arms. Homeless posed, show girls, strippers, prostitutes, accountants…you name it and they came to pose for this book. All body types and a hermaphrodite even showed up, not that she looked any different than anyone else, but the uniqueness of the individuals was captivating. What I loved the most about Mr. Friedler’s artwork was that some folks were comfortable with their bodies and posing nude for the camera, while others were trying to overcome their fear of being naked in front of others. What guts that took knowing they’d forever be immortalized in a publication!
For those of you brave enough to venture into the world of Naked Las Vegas, here’s the link to Greg Friedler’s website with a sample of his photos: http://www.gregfriedler.com/
Maybe I’m a tad strange—don’t ask my family, they think I’m really, really weird…LOL—but I’m fascinated by the human body. The curves, the creases, the rolls, the muscles, the different shapes of breasts and penises, and I find everyone beautiful, from the too skinny to the too big. Bodies are beautiful and each person is unique and I think we should celebrate our differences rather than criticize the less than ideal body type. Sure, I’d love to be thinner, but I don’t want to be skeletal either. And while I love Hugh Jackman’s buff ‘bod’ and gorgeous face—I just finished watching Australia, so my brains on drool overload—I actually prefer and am attracted to men that aren’t so gorgeous and put together. Yes, I find the average, everyday man much more appealing than Hugh Jackman! Women that I find to be the prettiest, typically have more weight on them than the emaciated chicks that come out of Hollywood.
I wish we could all glorify our bodies and be comfortable in our skins, but as long as we have society telling us we have to be perfect, none of us will ever be perfect enough. Why is nudity taboo when it’s so natural? Is it because we’re exposed to the world, open to criticism and can’t hide behind the masks of clothing? Kind of like hiding our real inner personalities from people, too, and I’m sure guilty of that. And has female pubic hair become taboo? Almost no women have it!!!
I’d love to hear what you think! Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!
The Crow...
My life has been in turmoil this week with one family problem after another, along with my book being rejected for not having more sex (ooookay...normally, I'm told there's too much *shrugs*), but I guess for who I was subbing to, it probably did need more. Unfortunately, I never found the time to write something up for today, so I'm reposting something I wrote for Moonlight, Lace & Mayhem a good long while ago. I'm going back to one of my favorite pastimes, reading about the lore and legends of mythical creatures. So, I hope you enjoy learning about...
~~~~~

THE CROW

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the Crow? For me, aside from the black birds that scavenge, it was the mystical belief that they are omens of death.

In my writing, I needed a mystical creature that could deliver a riddle from a higher power about the future. So, I started researching and quickly became fascinated by the Crow. Similar to the Raven it appears in mythology as a soothsayer, as a creator and cleanser and as omens of death. Okay, so I wasn’t completely wrong, but neither did I know near all of it.

Among the North America tribes the Crow was considered as the guardian of the sacred law that could see not only the past, but the present and the future.

In Celtic lore, the battle goddess Morrigan would shapeshift into either a crow or a raven and they were both seen as allies and companions.

Scottish folklore said the crow had 27 different sounds and each one of them correlated to an occasion, foretelling anything from coming guests to good fortune to an imminent death. Truly I found this fascinating and wanted to learn more about the 27 different cries. By the way, the number 27 was derived from the magical 3 x 9 derivative.

To the Greek, the crow was considered an unlucky warning. In fact, while crows were sacred to the Greek goddess Athene, she refused to allow them to perch atop the roof of Acropolis in Athens because they were omens of death. Even though they were considered omens of death, it did not prevent the Greek god Apollo from shapeshifting into a crow when he fled Typhon.

Medieval bestiaries saw the crow as birds of parental devotion and it was said that the crow led the migration of storks. Medieval Christians thought the crow was a sign of the devil because of its scavenging conduct, but it was also an icon of fidelity because it was thought that crows did not seek a new mate when its mate died. Magical properties were given to the crow as well, which included the skill to foretell the future, dismantle the past and to educate humans about how to mix humor, playfulness and love.

Interesting lore—or so I thought—was the Australian aboriginal legend. I found it in The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures, written by John & Caitlin Matthews © 2008:

“In Australian aboriginal legend, Crow, along with Tortoise and Frog, dissented in the corroboree (gathering) that suggested that Kangaroo and Emu, and Dingo and Goanna should mate. The animals fell to fighting but when they grew hungry, pelicans dived for fish to feed them and a fire was started to cook them. Crow warned them that to cook fish away from where they had been caught was illegal and the animals began to argue. Frog threw his voice to make it sound as if Crow was insulting Kangaroo, so confusing the other animals that they fell out even more and decided for ever after to have their own languages.”

All of this was a far cry from the 1994 movie, The Crow. In it, the lead character comes back as an undead entity bent on avenging his and his fiancée’s murder. Entertaining, yeah, and maybe he was loosely considered an omen of death, but he was really the cause of the death of those that murdered him and his fiancée. It was revenge and nothing more.

So, what do you think? Do you believe in the magical elements of Crows? For me, I don’t know, but I do know I had fun using the crow as a magical creature that showed up, shapeshifted into a beautiful woman with birdlike qualities and clothing made of feathers...here she is:

The crow shape shifted into a woman, with almond shaped eyes and long hair, both as black as a crow’s feather, and a curvaceous body encased in a midnight cat-like-pantsuit made of flowing feathers. A solitary feather floated and came to rest in the center of the table. (It's a work in progress, unedited, so go easy please! LOL)

I hope everyone has an awesome, relaxing, worry-free weekend!

Chapter One

Julija squinted against the sun’s harsh rays. Not even her darkly tinted sunglasses entirely cut the glare. The frames slid down her sweat-slick nose. She pushed them back up and looked around, her impatience rising. For the fifth time in as many minutes, she glanced at her watch. Two minutes left. She resettled her gaze on the odd-looking house across the street.

The structure looked more like a fortress than an actual home and gave her the creeps. It was too gothic, too dark, and contrary to her light-imbued life.

Made from slate, the house reached high into the sky like a castle with its domed ceilings. Gargoyles carved from stone rested above the windows, as if offering protection from demonic entities. With a vampire in residence, perhaps they did.

She shuddered to think of it as a home, but the richest, most powerful man in the city of Veil—Landau Jamieson the IV or V or something along that order—considered it such. The man was the sole reason she stood here, or rather the vampire disguised as a man was the sole reason. Ironically the city’s residents considered him royalty. Hell, more like Batman of Gotham in these parts.

Priceless. Absolutely priceless. For no other purpose other than to make herself feel good, Julija rolled her eyes beneath the thick shades.

The vampire had stolen the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore. The ancient tome detailing every creature in existence, including the fey, had been entrusted to the Elves at the dawn of creation. Whoever possessed the book also possessed great knowledge, expertise that could be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. Ownership of the book also ensured great power, power she could not allow a vampire to keep.

For a week now, Julija had watched him and tried to gauge the best time to strike. Failure was not an option for the best thief among the Elves. Secretly, she was proud of her talent; it had served her people well. Elves were renowned for their light step, and it just so happened her fingers were stickier than most of her kind.

Security systems could not deter her; she possessed enough magic to nix the best system in the world.

She would retrieve the book, once she figured out how to bypass the perceptive vampire and his minions. One thing still puzzled her—how had the vampire stolen it to begin with when only Elf Royals were allowed to touch it? Another dilemma for her since she was not an Elf Royal.

Her best chance to retrieve it would be in two days when the vampire attended the depot dedication of Veil's newly renovated train station. Feeling melodramatic about the event, she rolled her eyes again. How humans loved to waste money. The homeless lived near the train station, beneath the bridges in cardboard boxes. Died there too, while the station went through elaborate renovations for the wealthy and elite.

Julija glanced at her watch again as the black limousine rolled to a halt in front of the vampire’s home. Like clockwork, the man left for work every day at precisely the same time. Talk about being a creature of habit!

The vampire in question strode about as blatant as he pleased in daylight. Daylight! Vampires and daylight mixed like metal and acid. Daylight and acid were supposed to vaporize vampires and metal, but apparently not so with this vampire.

Every cocky step he took reeked arrogance. While she pondered how he managed to keep from melting beneath the sunlight, he lifted his head. Their gazes locked.

Cool as ice, and trained for confrontations, she returned his gaze. While not the most skilled fighter, she possessed some ability in that area.

Landau’s stylishly cut, dark blonde hair gleamed like gold beneath the bright sun. The man was tall, broad shouldered, and athletically built. The charcoal gray business suit, tailored precisely to fit his frame, bespoke wealth—not money, but wealth. Even from this distance, he oozed pheromones and drew her like an addictive narcotic. That could be dangerous for her elfin libido—inordinately high in comparison to other fey creatures.

The vampire tossed her a crooked grin before sliding into the back seat, leaving little question in her mind he’d spotted her. Unmoving, she watched as the limo pulled away.

Perfect. He knows he’s being watched.

Although gone from the residence, unfortunately that didn’t mean Landau left his home unguarded. Oh, no, nothing could be that easy.

Flagrant to her elfin eyes, his home embodied magic. Translated, that meant he’d opened the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore and was, in fact, utilizing the spells in the book. In all likelihood he’d used the same witchery to protect himself from the glaring sun.

Because of this, she’d have to kill him once she had the book in her possession again.

* * * * *

Landau adjusted the black sunglasses on his face and glanced out the limousine window.

The woman on the bench appealed to him with her pale, almost white, blonde hair. Through her thick shades he’d assessed her eyes to be pale blue with barely a hint of color, rather albino in nature. Her milky white complexion had looked softer than satin. He wondered how such delicate skin would bruise.

But she had an agenda. Either she was a reporter—not likely—or up to no good. Bingo! Landau couldn’t wait to find out the no good part. A long time had passed since he’d enjoyed himself.

Although he’d tried, he couldn’t read her mind. She possessed one of few human minds he couldn’t penetrate. Or she wasn’t human. The phenomena lent her an air of mystery. Even though he couldn't glean her thoughts, he knew her mind worked at top speed, planning, scheming, and devising until a perfect little blueprint had been mapped out in her mind. Her eyes were too shrewd to suggest otherwise.

He’d tossed her a snarky little grin before entering the limo, just to let her know he knew she was stalking him. That should leave give her something to think about. He chuckled then addressed his bodyguard. “Find out who she is.”

“Immediately,” Edward, an Abecedarian—a fledgling, in human terms—agreed and then tipped his nose in the air and sniffed as if in disdain over being assigned such a menial task.

Chapter Two

Alberic, the Ivory King—a pain in the ass old geezer in Julija’s opinion—greeted her at the hotel door. “I assume the man followed the same routine as before?”

“Yep,” she replied, ambling past him and collapsing onto the sofa. Julija set her feet down on the coffee table, crossed her ankles and looked up at him.

With arms crossed over his chest, he sent her a disgruntled gaze. Long, white-blonde hair fell to the middle of his back, interspersed with a braid of ebony on the right side of his head . . . the mark of the Ivory King. Alberic looked twenty, but was more like twenty thousand years old. He’d been around since the beginning of creation. Because of his age, he thought he knew every fucking thing about the universe. In Julija’s opinion, very few things were worse than dealing with a self-professed know-it-all.

“Have you conceived a plan?” he asked.

Why must he always talk down to her? Who said she needed a keeper anyway? If she found out who, she’d strangle the cretin when she returned home. She was a thief, not some freaky highborn elf with truly scary abilities, and she hungered to do her job without every move being questioned.

To piss him off, Julija shrugged. The subtle white-flare in his eyes suggested she’d hit her mark. “I figure the Depot dedication is the best time.”

“Figure?” He arched a snowy eyebrow.

She wanted to rip the blasted thing off and shove it down his insufferable throat.

Yeah,” she replied, trying to sound bland and fooling herself into believing she didn’t give a damn about her impertinence. To push her point, she arched her own eyebrow. A ballsy move, but Alberic’s elitist attitude rubbed her the wrong way.

“And if you’re wrong?”

Talk about playing the devil’s advocate. “I’m not.”

“But what if you are?”Alberic persisted.

“Look.” She sat up and rested her forearm on a knee. “I’m the thief. Allow me to do my job, will ya?”

“It doesn't feel right, Julija.”

“Is that your hocus pocus talking?” She shot back, waggling a finger.

“This is our future.”

His impatience grated on her nerves.

“Need I remind you he’s elfin kin?” he added.

Julija shot to her feet, fisting her fingers into her palms. “Have I ever let you down?”

The white eyebrow rose again. Really she ought to be promoted to sainthood for having to deal with the Ivory King.

Landau relaxed in his office chair and flipped a pen through his fingers when Doreen and Edward, his Abecedarian vampire children, entered his office. Doreen’s hand was laced into the crook of Edward’s elbow.

The sun had dipped below the horizon. Spells from the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore had provided Landau with a means to endure sunlight, had granted him freedom from the night’s slavery. He’d not divulged his secret to any other vampire and had only protected Edward from the sun because he needed his assistance during the day.

Doreen’s short, glossy black hair curled around her pixie face, and her sable eyes were enhanced by her dark makeup. Gracefully, she perched on the edge of her chair, crossing her ankles daintily. Edward stood behind her in full military stance.

“Find anything?” Landau asked.

“A name only,” Edward responded.

“You like her?” Doreen drew her mouth into an orchestrated pout.

“She intrigues me.” No human had the ability to hold his fascination. “Her name?”

“She checked into the hotel as Julija Sinclair.”

“Real name?”

Edward shrugged. “She’s a ghost.”

She wasn’t a ghost. History existed about her somewhere; it was a matter of finding it. “Family or friends?”

“Some chap is holed up with her.”

He delivered Edward a direct stare, an indication for him to continue.

“He’s not registered at the hotel, but I did discover one other bit of information. According to the hotel clerk, Julija likes to patronize Ravens.”

Landau rubbed his temples. Ravens was a nightclub that catered to individuals with a taste for debauchery.

“What’s the name of their hotel?"

“Veil Suites Inn, room 486.”

A low-end establishment. Landau frowned. Could she be after money? Did she hope to extort or blackmail him in some way?

“Does she visit other locations with regularity?”

A smile curled Edward’s lips. “Other than your home, that is?”

“Yeah, smartass,” he said with a grin.

“Nope.”

Ravens. Wow. The girl had an itch to scratch if she frequented the hardcore-not-for-the-faint-of-heart club. Landau rubbed his chin. Tonight would be a good night to pay a visit to Ravens.

Chapter Three

Landau entered the dimly lit club a little before midnight. A wave of rambling thoughts flooded him. With concerted effort, he managed to push them back and focus on the singer and the strangled words:

Oh, Dark Angel of death

Come feast upon my breath . . . .

The bottled-blonde, needle-loving singer belted out the lyrics in an ear-screeching howl. The blaring music pulsated inside Landau’s head, and the walls seemed to swell with the cumbersome beat. Horrible stuff. He preferred the Jazz Club up on Dixon Avenue.

While people from all walks of life danced to the music, he mentally probed the room, hoping his stalker would be here tonight.

Is that Landau Jamieson? He heard the thought from someone’s mind before pushing it aside and sifting through those open to him.

Wham! He winced when his mentalism struck a blockade. Again, he probed and again, wham . . . blocked.

With his gaze roaming the crowd, he felt the blood pulse through his brain. A satisfied grin tilted the corner of his lips. Ah, there she was.

Landau’s hunt had come to an abrupt halt.

Julija’s white-blonde hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail. He decided her eyes were ice blue without the shades deepening their hue. Her outfit displayed her dicey curves.

A man sat across from her with his back to Landau, his bearing rigid, almost regal. The stiff line of his spine suggested he found this hellhole highly offensive.

With her fingertips, Julija massaged her temples. Landau slid up to their table.

“Hello, darling,” he drawled, drawing Julija’s gaze.

His little stalker merely glared at him. Landau leaned an elbow on the table, blocking her view of her male friend. Her gaze grew frostier.

“Careful, careful.” He waved a finger at her and dropped his voice to his most charming tone. “You don’t want to give me frostbite.”

She looked at her companion, and Landau thought he saw irony in the icy-blue depths of her eyes. He smiled before canting his head around to take stock of her friend. The man stared into his eyes with a tight, knowing smile.

Landau stumbled back a step. Realizing he’d reacted unseemly, he planted his feet and found himself gawking at the strand of black braided hair and the silvery white eyes. “To what do I owe the honor of the Ivory King’s presence in my fair city?”

“Ivory what?” Julija echoed in feigned disbelief.

“Save it, love,” he said with a killing glance, mocking her lie. “And why are you stalking me?” Clearly, her features were elfin.

“Oh, do beg off.” She rolled her eyes. “I’m not stalking you.”

“You—”

“Your life’s in danger,” the highborn elf said.

“What?” Landau narrowed his eyes at the royal cretin. “And I suppose you’re here to protect me?”

The snot inclined his head.

Landau scoffed. “Bulletin! I’m a vampire.”

“Save it, love,” Julija shot back at him.

Landau whipped his head about and raised his eyebrows.

She gave him a tight smile. “Call yourself whatever you like; you’re still a Crimson Elf.”

He felt his nostrils flare. “Yeah,” he said with a sneer, his incisors exposed. Under normal circumstances, he could conceal them, but from the moment he’d caught sight of Julija he’d been unable to contain them. “That didn’t seem to matter when the rest of you fucking elves decided to eradicate us. Don’t expect me to believe you suddenly care.”

“We allowed your race to survive.” The sardonic comment came from her snotty friend.

“So you have.” His sarcasm should have knocked the breath from their lungs.

His people shouldn’t have been exterminated. They hadn’t asked to become a new elfin race, driven by bloodlust, never to see the sun again, never to screw again. Of all the curses to choose from, he wasn’t sure which had been the biggest blow. Elves were known among other races for their high libidos. In the end, his elfin kin had turned against their own kind.

Landau raked his gaze over the elf-man. “I believe I recall you from another time.”

Before Landau became a vampire at Chaos’ whim, he’d known the Ivory King well, and this elf wasn’t king then. The elf cocked his head to the side, awaiting further comment.

“Do you like what you see?” Landau turned his attention to Julija instead of elaborating, snubbing the royal elf.

Julija sputtered. “I b-beg your . . . um . . . pardon?”

“You were studying me.”

“No.” She sniffed and scrunched her nose as if his scent offended her. “I wasn’t.”

He found the situation amusing and called her bluff with a knowing grin. Intrigued, he watched her eyes focus on his fangs before she licked her lips. Her gaze felt like a caress. Hell, even his cock responded with a twitch, a fascinating reaction. Not simply because he’d been impotent for ten thousand years, but also because she was an elf. Lust was an oddity. Being aroused by an Ivory Elf—an enemy—was ludicrous.

“Would you care to dance?” Landau surprised himself with the request.

She flicked a nervous glance in the direction of the man-elf. She swallowed hard and replied crisply, “I don't dance.”

“Good,” Landau purred. Cool fingers clamped around her wrist and yanked her to her feet. She squawked like any human would and stumbled to catch her footing. “Then I'll have the pleasure of teaching you.”

Smiling by the time he reached the dance floor with his unwanted partner in tow, he turned to her and said, “Let’s tango.”

She glared up at him, and all Landau could think about was her sexy curves. Her hands hugged her hips, the bright red painted nails stark against her pale flesh. The low-rider jeans exposed a swath of skin where her pants and buttercup shirt gapped. Her belly was flat, her navel pierced with a dangling glitter of rubies. Elves loved sparkly trinkets. Her divine top fell into a deep V, exposing the swell of her full breasts.

Definitely fuckable.

Although he hadn’t taken a woman since his transformation, he burned with the desire to fuck her, and the whore-inspired clothing clinging to her body implied she was easy.

Even in heels, she barely reached his chin, and he could easily lift her up and screw her against the wall. While everyone watched. If only he had the capability.

“What part of ‘I don’t dance’ don’t you get, vampire?”

Angry, she fairly spat the word vampire. Her feral eyes gleamed and turned him on, as did the fury smoking her voice.

“How about the part where I don’t give a damn?”

“Go to hell!” Her eyes sparked again and Landau found it sexually fascinating.

“You’re making a scene.”

Julija glanced about the bar. Several other patrons stared in their direction, but she shrugged, confirming his suspicion that she didn’t give a shit. “Your problem; you’re the prince here, not me.”

She turned to walk away, but before she took a step he clamped his fingers around her upper arm and snatched her around. He snaked his other arm around her waist as he drew her to him.

Her nostrils flared.

Supremely satisfied he’d gotten a rise out of her, the next thing he knew his mouth claimed hers. Their teeth met and she moaned, no doubt from pain, but he hoped from pleasure, as well.

He moved his hand up her lower back and grabbed a lock of her hair in his fist. With a tug, he tilted her head back and her mouth slipped open so he could worship her with his tongue.

Julija stood immobile in his arms. She didn’t fight him. She didn’t do anything as he tasted her. He sensed her surprise, suspected he’d shocked her into silence.

She tasted like nectar from the gods. He hadn’t planned to accost her, had merely intended to get her away from that haughty highborn. Her defiance now dared him into action.

He hadn’t kissed a woman in ten thousand years, hadn’t desired to kiss a woman in all that time either. In awe, he realized an erection had sprouted from that simple kiss—his first boner in eons.

Once he tasted her, he wanted more than just her body. He wanted to taste the warmth of her flesh beneath the pressure of his fangs, wanted to taste the stickiness of her life against his tongue.

And, oh, so easily, his fangs would burst forth, as easily as he could imagine her papery flesh giving way beneath them. Her coppery blood would spurt . . . .

Landau shoved her aside. He’d been so close to taking her right there on the dance floor while the highborn and humans watched. So close to draining her too.

Struggling for control, he slammed his eyes shut and focused on the unnatural shake of his hands. The depth of his uncontrollable emotions alarmed him. If not for the last fleeting moment of lucidity, he would have taken her blood and filled her body with his right there.

The rushing sound of blood pumping through her veins filled his ears. The beating of her heart pulsed in his head. She was frightened and had good reason to be. He wanted her; had almost lost control of himself. The thought frightened him.

Opening his eyes, he met her dazed gaze. Her fingers pressed against her slightly parted lips. Her eyes were wide, expressing confusion.

The highborn stepped through the crowd—hell, to be frank, the crowd parted for the bastard—that had encircled Julija and him. Painfully, Landau’s heart pounded and he couldn’t swallow past the knot in his throat.

The male elf stepped into his path, placed himself directly between them, and glared into his eyes. “You’d be wise not to repeat the offense,” he said haughtily.

“Why?” Landau barked. “She your elf?”

Julija regained a portion of her composure and stalked up to the highborn. Amused, Landau watched as her anger eliminated her ability to hold her present form and she shifted. Her ears became pointy, a distinct elfin trait he’d have recognized had she not been in human form. The elf birthmark slid into view on her left temple—a curly-Q squiggle identifying her as an Ivory Elf. All elves possessed such a mark somewhere on their faces. The highborn would have one too, but he was still in enough control to mask his elfhood.

Anger sparked in her eyes, and her luscious, pouty lips formed a straight, hard line. She nudged her friend aside and slapped Landau with all the strength she could muster—quadrupled, powerful fey strength.

Landau’s head snapped back and he growled. He stared her down—or tried to—while the stinging in his cheek burst to life like a torch.

The highborn smirked, but did nothing to intervene. Landau felt the fire in his eyes and knew they’d recognize how he struggled to leash his power.

He’d have to kill her now. Too bad, such spunk could have proven entertaining in bed, particularly after such a long interval of impotence. He had little doubt he’d find a wealth of pleasure in her sexy body. But no one, absolutely no one, struck him without provocation, and one kiss was not provocation.

Landau inhaled a calm breath and tamped down his anger. Yes, such a waste that he wouldn’t feel her body writhing beneath him while he fucked her to climax.

“Until we meet again, Jewel.” Landau uttered the endearment between teeth clenched so hard, his fangs pierced his bottom lip.

“Not if I can help it,” she snarled.

He allowed her to have the last word now, but soon he’d have the final one.
